This week I started coaching a group of high school students for their Skills Canada competition in photography.
In April they will be judged on particular criteria within the subject of photography and my job is to help hone their skills.
Naturally I was feeling a bit nervous with my first class. I didn’t know where they were at within their photography skill level. I spoke on composition, previsualization, light, colour, etc. Near the end of our time together one of the students spoke up and said she had trouble understanding aperature. Happily, I dove right into the basics of aperature, and at one point her eyes lit up and she stated that she felt she was finally understanding it. I can’t tell you how elated I felt hearing this. Teaching, is a privilege. Especially when you happen to have students who are keen to learn. I’m already looking forward to my next class. I’m excited to find out what these bright kids are going to teach me!
