I’m just now getting this image off my camera. I had completely forgot about my pie images since I decided on a whim to take some pictures while baking. Anyone remember the way Billy Crystal said “pecan pie” in the movie When Harry Met Sally? Peeecan Piiiiie. No one? <sigh> oh well.

I adore pecan pie. Correction. I adore my mom’s recipe for pecan pie. I was educated many years ago that although a simple recipe, not all pecan pie has a gorgeous taste. I baked up mom’s recipe for Thanksgiving. It was delicious as expected. 😉

Is your kitchen bursting with vegetable goodness like mine? I recently brought some pears to a friend’s doorstep whereupon she immediately attempted to load off her bounty on me. I graciously accepted most of her offerings, but had to decline a few. So I have beautiful, rich eggplant, cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes and more tomatoes (fried green tomatoes – yum!), swiss chard, carrots, onions, zucchini, cucumber and squash.

Are you cooking and preserving like mad to take advantage of your garden’s offerings?

I must admit to wishing I lived in a climate that allowed an outdoor garden year round. I enjoy how few trips I’ve made to the grocer this season.

This is my second big bag of pears I have collected, (the bag bit the dust in the end).

Last year I made a ginger and pear spread with my harvest. I’m not sure what, if anything I’ll do this year. I gave the contents of the entire first bag away to family and friends. They need a good week to ripen so it’ll give me time to think about canning or delivering to doorsteps (maybe both).

Don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled to eat food from my backyard, but I still consider myself a novice when it comes to harvesting in large quantities and sometimes it makes me feel a bit anxious to get to work before they turn to mush.

BTW, I need to especially gush about the beets and swiss chard growing in the garden this year. They have been a source of many a summer meal: the beets so sweet and delicious (did you know they barbecue in minutes?) and the buttery chard tastes especially good pan seared with garlic. Go get yourself some!
